Street Fighter Invades Zen Pinball on PSN

The premiere pinball game on PlayStation 3, PSN downloadable Zen Pinball, today released its first DLC table on the PlayStation Store. Typically that wouldn’t catch the eyes of anyone other than the diehard pinball fans out there, but this isn’t just any table — it’s a tribute to Street Fighter II. As you might imagine, it’s absolutely loaded with references and homages to Street Fighter II.

Pictures don’t do it justice; this is a beautiful looking, extremely colorful pinball table. It’s not the most heavily populated table in terms of goals, but there are a number of different things to achieve (several of which have Trophies that go along with them). Blanka, who stands near the top, just above the boat from Ken’s stage, will light up with his signature Electric Thunder move when a ball is launched towards him. Doing this builds up a ‘Charge’ meter one letter at a time, with the maximum ‘Charge’ giving you a multi-ball. A car sits in the middle, an homage to the car smash bonus game. The barrel smash bonus game also gets some love as it’s one of the goals on the board. There’s also a USAF plane sits at the top right-hand corner, but as far as I discovered in my limited play time thus far, it’s one of the few non-interactive sections.
This is noticeably a Super Street Fighter II Turbo-inspired board; Akuma has a predominant space where he stands on the left-hand side, and both Dee Jay and Cammy from Super Street Fighter II are both right smack in the middle. Most of the rest of the cast can be seen throughout the rest of the board — Dhalsim sits below the flippers waiting to be the savior of ill-played balls; Chun-Li hidden up along the left side; and two Street Fighter arcade machines can be seen on either side of the table. In other words, there is something Street Fighter covering damn near every single inch of this pinball table.

At just $2.49, this is an absolute bargain-priced no-brainer for any fan of both pinball and Street Fighter. If you don’t already own the $9.99 Zen Pinball, the grand total can begin to creep up on you a bit between the board and the game. But considering you’re getting the existing four tables in addition to the Street Fighter tribute — plus what might be the best online multiplayer support in any pinball game out there — this is still a highly recommended title for pinball novices and experts alike. (The truly hardcore pinball fans will really appreciate the ability to access the operators menu, allowing you to change board settings like a real pinball table; test lights, flashes, sounds, adjust ball save timer, tilt warnings, etc.)
A demo of Zen Pinball on the PlayStation Store will let you try out one of the game’s old tables and get a feel for how ZP handles. For everyone else, the Street Fighter tribute table is available now.
